San Jose, CA – Today Wuhan United announced the official launch of their organization. The nonprofit is working to combat the 2019 coronavirus outbreak by assisting hospitals and cities affected by the coronavirus in China. It is now accepting public donations on its website.

“Our immediate goal is to rally individuals and organizations in the U.S. to help fight the coronavirus in Wuhan and China,” says Tom Gong, the president of the organization. “We created this nonprofit organization after we realized the battle against coronavirus was not a short one and restoring Wuhan would take more commitment.”

In December 2019, a new strain of coronavirus was detected in Wuhan, China. Since then, tens of thousands of people have been diagnosed with the illness, and more than 900 have died. Medical supplies, such as surgical masks and protective gear, are in high demand. The group partners with other nonprofits to ship these supplies to hospitals in need.

Wuhan United was originally started as a fundraising project by Northern California Alumni Association of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Northern California Alumni Association of Wuhan University on January 23, 2020 after Wuhan was quarantined. As the deadly outbreak evolved in China, the group decided it was necessary to carry on their mission as a dedicated nonprofit organization.
